Reply to picture of Kevin Clements doing backstroke:

- You know what they say about backstroke: "It's looking up".
- Terrific stroke patern image from the path of the bubbles.
- All throwing motions are similar: coil/stretch, bend and rotate for power and accelerate through the finish. Kevin looks like the incomparable Tom Brady when he threw that pass completion from his back side - (sorry Glenn) I think it was against the Browns or the Bengals.

For me, it shows the "magical" part of swimming - the silent underwater world where you can dive into, no matter how much is going on on the surface (and in daily life). I'd like to see this kind of picture with freestyle, though :).

And it reminds me that I have to wait another 14 hours for return to the pool, *sigh*.

Great streamline. You could hardly see the legs. Just looking at pic and without seeing the text, my poor eyes couldn't immediately figure if the guy is facing down or up!

I like the vortices being shed by the propulsive arm - very cool...

Also look at the water disturbance at the surface - the calm water starts just outside his body shell. I really see that amongst swimmers swimming at speed...

im no expert when it comes to backstroke(of any stroke, for that matter)

the water sure looks inviting though.. clean and cool..

for us in the equator, summer's coming!

j like the magical effect of the reflection of the water and the buoyancy of this swimmer ploughing the blue surface.
Sorry for my english

Any chance he's swimming freestyle with his cap on over his face? (I guess his elbows would be a problem...)

Responded Mar 03, 2005 12:56AM

The trail of bubbles shows that Kevin rolled into a deep catch and is in the process of rotating back to the other side amplifying his pull speed, or "throwing" as coachkopie described it in his comment.
The bent arm ensures that all of his catch is thrown in the direction of his feet "sending him forward (backward?)".

Can you tell that I've been watching my GoSwim Backstroke DVD? Thanks Jeff!
