03/22/05 Pullouts and Breakouts

Posted by Barbara Hummel on Mar 22, 2005 12:34PM (1,884 views)
After a travel day yesterday and 4 hours sleep, I wanted to do something nice and easy this morning. This was in a 25-yard pool.

WARMUP: 900
With fins: Alternate 50 SA drill and 50 LA drill for 600 yards. Make the drills more complex as you progress. Finish with 100 freestyle.

200 EZ breaststroke kick

PULL/SCULL/KICK SET: 400 + 200
With pull buoy:
400 "IM," doing 25 scull/25 swim/25 kick/25 swim in each stroke

Finish with 200, alternating 25 whole-stroke breast (with pull buoy) and 25 freestyle pull (with pull buoy).

PULLOUT/BREAKOUT SET: 400
20 X 25 with 5 bobs recovery between each 25
Odds: Breaststroke @ 5 strokes max per length. Experimented with different pulldowns, trying to get to the halfway point before breakout.

Evens: Freestyle @ 14 strokes max per length and taking only 1 breath per length. Focused on breaking out FORWARD and low.

WARMDOWN: 100 EZ

Total Yardage: 2100

Barbara - I was able to find out the meaning of most abbreviations and terms you are using by myself, but could you please explain what "bobs" are?

Thanks.

Sybille,
Bobs are just slow easy breaths in and out -- but do them by slowly dunking your head and shoulders below the surface to blow out the air.

Barbara,
What is the advantage to bobbing vs. deep breaths above water?

The act of slowly and rhythmically moving your body up and down and taking your head above and below the water forces you to regulate the breath in a way that's not possible (or at least not AUTOMATIC) when your head and shoulders are above the water. The act of going below the surface forces you to breathe out a little more completely, and it is very relaxing. It also helps you count breaths and stay more consistent in how much rest you take (measured by how many bobs you do) between swims. I can get into almost a Zen zone on sets where I do bobs as recovery between swims.
