Q; ? Good morning ....Are we seeing a foot-print trace of Backstrokers Post-Modern Forward-Tumble or the Ole Master's Classic Back-Flip....Will the ears drop back between the arms before the Push ? Very neat ! But... we could add for balance and imagine holding a neutrally-boyant kick-drill resistive ball

90% bend at knee possibly giving good push .

Interesting to see he already has his hands overlapping ready to streamline.

I put these pic's up at home for the kids to see.

It seems he has enough air to go well beyond the 15 meters mark. What is his lung capacity?

I whis I could turn like that. That would really improve my free times.

Responded May 02, 2005 04:44AM

ye imagine on short course say 200m how much faster turns like that would make you..........

Responded May 02, 2005 05:51PM

Based on my own faults with flips, his body is exactly straight on - ie perpendicular to the wall and if he is doing a front crawl (not a backcrawl) he is in exactly the right body position leading into the pushoff when he'd be flipping onto his frontside. This contrasts those, like me, who start to turn onto my frontside while pushing off the wall.

What's the bright light near the surface in his lane? For a moment, I thought they were bubbles.

Responded May 04, 2005 06:05AM

If this is freestyle should he push off on his back and slowly turn to his front as he is kicking?

Responded May 05, 2005 01:27PM

Given that this tumble is *much much* better than mine, I notice that Erik's feet are *flat* against the wall. Mine are never flat (at least not on today's efforts) when I flip I push off from the balls of my feet - I never get the arch/heel of my foot against the wall. Is it personal preference or is one way preferred to the other?

Responded May 06, 2005 09:08AM

He is certainly in a power position ready for launch.

Responded May 08, 2005 02:02PM

there's even guys pushing off completely on their back and then turning on the stomach after push off while fly-kicking (Michael Klim did this in 2000 when he set the WR in the 4x100 free relay, and Nataly Coughlin does this too). The important thing is to first push off and then rotate, not rotate while pushing, as the power of the push off will be diminished...

Responded May 09, 2005 12:05PM

If you are familiar with ballistic motion (the way a bullet travels) this will tell you why the rotation is beneficial. Rotating makes the bullet go straighter and further than it would otherwise. Same applies to a swimmer. This is a great visual to use with young swimmers. Have them imagine that they are being shot out of a gun!

For me, as beginner, that picture is amazing and I really would like to see the whole process
