Pic of the Week - November, 4, 2005

This picture shows Amanda recovering her hands over the water. Her recovery is one of the things that sets her stroke apart from most other breaststrokers. Tell us what you think.

It is nor proper for every breaststroker to recover above the water, for example if the recovery is above water but in a kind of circular motion (up and down) that swimmer is in trouble.
Take for instance Kaitlin Sandeno, she recovers at water level, but always FORWARD and that is the key point.

Kind regards
Tomas

Thomas,
You are absolutely right. Hands above the water is not right for everyone, but it seems to work alright for Amanda.

What works well for one swimmer may or may not work well for another. The only way to figure those things out is to try it.

Of course that over the water recovery recovery works well for Amanda, she is a very powerful athlete.
Nonetheless I have my doubts if that can be slowing her down because when she anchors her hands to start her inward pull she slams her hips forward with such a force that she ends up with her upper body very high in the water and in a very STEEP angle, far more than 45 degrees, and that creates additional drag.

Kind regards
Tomas
