Compare this position with the goswim logo, it looks like the head is in the wrong place (or am I taking the logo too literally?)! |
The logo is not anatomically correct, just cool looking. If it were she would have an incredibly flexible torso. |
The logo's fine, so is the swimming. Maybe the logo is more like Misty |
FOrget the logo...her hips are in a great position. I like how you can NOT see the top of her behind because her hips are so high. |
I also noticed that her fingertips are already pointing down even though her elbows and arms are at the surface. One of those major "minor" things! |
Those are both really great points. This picture was taken from the section of the Go Swim All Stokes DVD, Very Little Up and Down Movement. The fact that her hips are up out of the water, her arms are at the surface, and her fingertips are already catching is what makes her stroke so efficient. |

I think Misty has a stronger and deeper kick and hides this by pushing down further with her chest. But more vertical movement is less streamlined so there is a balance between stonger kick or more streamlined body position. Misty doesn't dive, because her hands remain just below the surface at this point in the stroke cycle. What makes fly difficult is when the hips drop too low, the degree of up/down shoulder movement is individual preference, but the hips must stay high. |

Thanks Speedy.

Yep, different strokes for different swimmers. Misty has much more body movement which can be associated with body type, and flexibility. Everyone can't swim the same. |

I read somewhere that its only worth kicking hard in fly with good ankle flexibility, otherwise all the kicking force is downwards and not backwards. To kick hard the swimmer needs good back AND ankle flexibility, if the swimmer only has average flexibility they should kick moderately. It all sounds obvious but the trick is to find a focus that suits the swimmer, and drills to help find out what's best for them. |
We are a group of swimmers who swim really fast, and like to help others learn how to reach their competitive potential in the area of professional swimming.
