200 medley tactics

Hi,
anyone have any interesting resource for 200 IM tactics. I aim to try and get under 2.20.00 in the Masters WC this year. However I think my approach to this event is all wrong - no matter how hard I train, my rep times during training are no better than they were about 6 months ago and I am much fitter now.

Alternate muscle groups in the race. Focus your attention on ONE part of the body per stroke. A very standard strategy is LEGS/ARMS/LEGS/ARMS.

This basically means, focus on the kick and hips on fly, the rotation and turnover on back, the kick with good extension on breast, and the turnover and reach on free.

The bad part about a 200 IM is that it's pretty much an all out sprint the entire way (or as close to that as possible), alternating what you focus on will potentially allow the other part of the body to relax just a bit.

that's sounds like a good suggestion.. I have a 200 IM event this coming weekend albeit in a 25 metre pool. Maybe I will give this a try in Training tonight.

Ian,
A good strategy that I used to use and still teach is to race your 2 WORST strokes as hard as you can and swim your 2 BEST at about 85 percent.

The reason this works well is because your 2 best strokes will be good so keep them smooth and strong, but you will have to get up and race harder on your 2 worst so you do not lose any ground.

Hope this helps a little. Just another way to swim.

Thanks for the tips again. I swam a fairly good 200 medley at the weekend esp considering I took part in many events, knocked about 7 seconds off of my entry time and swam a 2.25.9 still need a lot of work to bring this down to sub 2.20 but I know what I need to do.
I went for the tactics that Gramps suggested in the end, backstroke and breast being the weaker strokes for me. I steered clear of kicking too hard on the fly as I tried this out in the 100 IM earlier in the day and got cramp in the foot :-D but this was after swimming 3 other events. thanks again guys...
