just 2 notes on this one. first he needs to bring his legs together a little and second he needs to bring arms up straigh so he doesnt waste energy.

When I first looked at this picture I had a similar reaction as did you Ben. I noticed the legs seemed to be a bit wide, etc...however, when I realized this was Michael Phelps I defaulted to his knowledge and feel for his own start. This pic is great because it reminds us that there isn't only one way to do something. Very Cool.

Also depends EXACTLY when the picture was taken. The viewers perception of timing and angle could be off a little. If we saw it from the side or frame by frame in a video, it might look OK

Yep it is Michael Phelps. That leg up high is kind of his trademark track start...and he is aiming to get his whole body through an imaginary hole in the water. Nonetheless he aknowledges that "diving, turns and some breastroke specifics" are his "weak points".....
