Ideal possition to start a competition. |

I would say maybe curl your thumbs under with the rest of your fingers. |

OK, I am not in the current loop of swimming, but I have so many questions about the "track start" and it's use instead of traditional "grab start". Why is it considered better to drive off of the block with one foot back instead of two feet forward? Wouldn't you get more force from the power of two legs driving forward? And with one foot back, it looks like the center of gravity is also moved back. Why is that better? It seems now there is a greater distance to move the CoG before you even leave the block? What leg is preferred to be the back foot (dominant or non-dominant) and why? Like I said, I am not in the "know" of the current swimming world, but I have been curious about this for a while. |

Well, different studies have not been able to conclude that the track start is better than the grab start.

Hi mightybean. I've got some great shots of a current World Record Holder working on his start. He told me that he's finally concluded that a slight lean backward has improved his speed to his breakout point. While leaving the blocks is a bit slower, his ultimate speed carry's more momentum. The ONLY way you'll be able to figure out which one works for you, is to experiment, time, and experiment and time again... until you determine which works for you. Tomas, unless there is research stating the track start has less false starts, there's no real reason to say that. Many of us only ever used the traditional start and NEVER false started. Learning a stable position in whichever start you choose is something that comes with study and work, and you shouldn't choose your start based on hearsay. |

At this stage I think he is leaning too far back??? |
|
|
Everytime I do a grab start I do a false start. So I do a track start and I'm almost always the first hitting the water :o) |

Also his front foot does not appear to have the toes in the right position, thumb position? his heal on the front foot does not appear to be in line with his little toe which is what I want to see. |
|

Wow. I can't even SEE his toes, and I took the picture. As usual, we have to make sure we don't conform the swimmer into our view. Some swimmers, in order to get into a comfortable, and stable position on the blocks, will pitch their toes slightly inward, or outward. These are the fine points, and sometimes forcing all athletes into perfect alignment will limit their ability for quick, and powerful take-offs. At least that's my opinion. |

his left hill is towards back and he should lean back.his thumbs should not bend.is track start more effective than normal start? |
We are a group of swimmers who swim really fast, and like to help others learn how to reach their competitive potential in the area of professional swimming.
