I love this drill! I try all sorts of things to get the kids to understand "THE FEEL".Maintaining and the application of pressure on the palm of the hand is critical in fast swimming. I believe sculling drill progressions are the best way to teach the strapless paddles concept. Here’s the one we use in practice.
We do this on variable speeds or on a interval. The kids have a love hate relationship with this! |

I like this drill, it makes the swimmer very aware of their hands and the hand attitude during the sculling motion. Slight modifications to the angle have significant affects on the efficiency of the scull. I would also recommend a flat paddle (like the TYR Catalyst show) so that the forward recovery under water can be completed without losing the paddle or creating backward resistance during this phase. Just use descretion when choosing the size of paddle for this drill, don't go too big. |
We are a group of swimmers who swim really fast, and like to help others learn how to reach their competitive potential in the area of professional swimming.
