The oldest person on my Masters team is 79, but there are lots of swimmers older than she is on other teams so I think she'll be swimming into her 90s or even beyond! She competes in at least two meets a year and does all the freestyle distances, as well as backstroke. She also does a one-mile ocean race every year. Because she has a smooth, efficient freestyle, I think long distance free is her best. I think her secret is that she has great technique and that she has lots of close friends on the team who make it fun to come to practice.

Doris Russell, age 86, who hails from Columbia MD and still trains several times a week. She swam at YMCA Masters Nationals in May. She swims more fly in practice than folks half her age...
