Breaststroke - Streamlined Push

Truth be told, there really isn't a simpler drill in existence, yet there also isn't a drill that carries more importance in all of swimming.

While I'm focusing this drill toward breaststroke, practicing it for all strokes if very important.

Why Do It:
Being able to maintain a solid, straight, and streamlined bodyline with so much integrity will allow you to build an underwater pull that will help you travel far, fast, and with little effort.

How to Do It:
1.  Position yourself at the wall, ready to push off a bit deeper than normal, but also fairly straight.  Don't position your feet too high, or too low.  Your goal will be as much of a parallel line to the surface as possible.
2.  Lock your hands together over your head prior to pushing off.
3.  Point your toes as much as possible as soon after the push as possible.
4.  Hold this position as long as possible without kicking, pulling, or twisting your body.
5.  Maintain this position until your body reaches the surface... then continue to hold it until you stop, or run out of air.

How to Do It Really Well (the Fine Points):
You may feel your body twisting and turning.  This is very natural and it may take some time to learn how to control it.  It's the fine adjustments that you make inside your body that will allow you to stay straight, and true, for the duration of the push.

Play with when you allow air to escape, and feel if this makes you "heavier" in the water, to allow you to travel just a bit further.

Put this bodyline together with a solid underwater pull, with the goal of going as far as possible with a single underwater pull sequence.

A sidenote: We all have a new goal with this.  Roque Santos can go the ENTIRE 25 doing this drill.  I know I have a LOT of work to do, so you're NEVER too old or too accomplished to continue learning all the fine points.

Does Roque Santos do the under water pull and the second kick to do the entire 25 or just streamline? The guy in the video is not too shabby either. It looks like he makes it to the flags with no under water pull. I was impressed that the second swimmer takes more than 2/3 the pool swimming free before he catches up the streamlined swimmer. So far I can't make it to 10 meters; not even 1/2 way. :roll:

25 meters or 25 yards (or is it feets?). Either way, awsome streamline position and a bit of muscles in those legs he must have

i tried this several times - only got about 11-12 yards. i didn't twist or turn, just slowly came to a stop. i did it in baggy tank suit. have you tried in a tech suit vs. a training suit? i don't have decent tech suit right now to try...

I grew up chasing Roque in northern California. Nothing has changed in 22 years and I still can't beat him. I got past the half way point in a 25m pool this afternoon. My pool is only 4-ft deep and I am really out of shape. I'll keep at it.

From my experience, this needs to be taken with a grain of salt. One cannot get into the habit of gliding too long while everyone else is up on top, breathing, stroking and kicking one's perfectly streamlined ass.

Oh great... a classy guy. It's a DRILL aqualech... and the ability to hold a streamline this long is a great foundation to build around. If nothing else, you made me laugh tonight.

Can't agree more about the importance of being able to get into a streamlined position. I used to do it to a fault, and could glide farther than just about anyone, ever in races, while getting my butt kicked!. Take it easy, I was just pointing out that there is a danger of remedial swimmers getting the wrong idea about how long they should stay in the glide in general. Probably best to follow this drill with one working on smooth breakout, experimenting with how deeply to pushoff for best balance. One suggestion to make the drill better - have swimmers experiment with foot placement on the pushoff - have the feet apart as they would when jumping on land. I see a lot of swimmers pushing off with their feet together which is not as powerful.

:) Me take it easy? Who was talking about someone kicking some butt? While appreciate input, and always welcome critique, and discussion and obviously your suggestions of adding more to a drill. However, since we generally have kids frequent the site, I would hope you could find a better way to tell us how to win races than reverting to world wide wrestling talk. Thanks for your advice, and I'll do my best to take it easy now.

I think this guy swims in a 25-yard pool but... really... at a certain point it doesn't make any difference. He's traveling.
