Swimming Set of the Week - September 2, 2008

Posted by Barbara Hummel on Sep 02, 2008 10:00AM (2,982 views)

This set of 100 IMs offers a "take it to failure" challenge as well as a mental challenge to keep track of the sendoffs.

??? X 100 IM on the following sendoff pattern (read instructions below before starting!):

Swim this as a continuous set of 100 IMs,  i.e., no breaks between the groupings of 3 X 100.  Choose an initial sendoff that gives you approximately 30 seconds rest.  Keep going until you can no longer make the sendoff.   Ideally, you want to complete about fifteen 100s before you reach failure.    Fins are recommended on this set because they give you a wider range of speed and this allows you to prolong the set :)

PS: The first grouping of 3 X 100 will actually be 4 X 100.

Barbara...how is it possible to get to 1:00 sendoff time? That will be a world record of around 0:40 for the 100 IM!!!

Just a possibility....and remember that you've got fins on...and that you're taking the set to failure, which means you have NO rest toward the end.

Ok Barbara...I'll try it and let you know the outcome.

Yep. Have fun. Personally, my limit is around 1:30 or so on this set, but it's fun to see how low you can go.

Leaving the fins at home...I was feeling great on this one... even down to the 1:20 interval. At 1:15, things hurt a little, but I still felt strong. The bottom dropped out as soon as I tried the 1:10 (I made it, but...) After this dismal failure, I did a 100 easy, then rest, doing three more 100's on 1:15 just to prove to myself that I could. Then I attempted the 1:10 again... and couldn't make it.

It is always amazing to me how much of a difference just 5 seconds rest makes.

lol, that's my feeling exactly on this set. You can't believe how huge and good that extra 5 seconds feels.
