look at that shoulder blade! The guy is sprinting like hell... |
Definitely moving fast by all the splishy splashy... or trying to. This reminds me of a flaw I encounter all of the time. Although perspective is challenging I would say his shoulder is way deeper than the hips and he probably isn't getting the best dps. I think that his hips are in a GREAT high position and that he is getting great perpendicular pull and a good ROM in the kick! Low bodyfat because u can see this guy's bicep and shoulder muscles pretty good. Very hard to tell, but I think he is stretching out his right side for a side crunch during the pull. I bet he is quite fast, although not as fast as he could be since he isn't getting the underside of his body from that shoulder, that is rotated very far, to the hip at about a 20 deg angle going from the shoulder up high to the hip down the slope of the angle. Instead of being a torpedo streamline body his shoulder is creating a sort of backwards torpedo with a nice torpedo like feet/hip position. Is he trying to swim backstroke feet first maybe?! lol Great picture! |

It would appear to me that he is only rotating the shoulders and not from the hips at all thus causing a torque in the body which could create problems. If his hips were rotating as well his feet would be kicking 'across' the water rather than up and down. Also, the left knee seems quite bent as there is a big gap between his right and left leg. On the plus side his head appears to be quite still and focussing upwards with the water level at his crown. He does look very lean, probably more like a triathlete than a straight, out and out swimmer |

He looks like he may be sprinting a just arms drill? His legs look pretty limp, or at least pretty out of position. He is definitely twisting exclusively at the torso, and, as GW alluded to above, that combined with the extensive arm stretch could create some muscle shearing. To chime in a lot with what is said above, it appears that he is definitely digging a lot further back with that arm then would be recommended. (Shoulder cuff danger) I think he is doing it to compensate for a lack of body depth for his catch, and that could be easily corrected by rotating his whole body a bit, instead of just his torso. |

It means to me my worst stroke. |
Glenn, is he one of your swimmers and were you working on anything in particular? |
Strong kid. Left leg is really dropped. I agree more full body rotating would help. He is really workining it though. Hows the weather in your all's area. It's snowing... again in Wyoming. We had a nice week of summer though. |
Yep... he's one of the guys I train with, and we're working on making his underwater dolphins, and flutter kick SMALLER. ;) He's also mainly a water-polo player turned swimmer and a an all around great kid. So be kind. ;) Lori, weather required air conditioning this week. ;) |
So with his water polo strength and explosive speed he should make a good sprinter when he irons out a few of the technical skills? Good luck with him Glenn and keep us informed on his progress |

Una parte de la rotacion del estilo de dorso, en un tramo a maxima velocidad. |
I want some of that weather!!! If you could find it in your heart send it our way. |
Muy buena Juan. |
Glenn, you know what Juan is saying? Great! |
I've been using Google Translator for Juan. Is that cheating? :) |
No, not at all; cheating would be saying you do know Spanish. |
Juan is saying " A part of backstroke is to be rotated and stretched out for maximum speed." Or he is talking about a flight of stairs. Glenn is responding by saying, "Very good, Juan." P.S. I am not saying I know Spanish (so I might be misunderstanding Juan), but I am having fun practicing my skills. Anyone can say stop at any time and I will, but someone on a more recent post said it was helpful for me to translate.... |
We are a group of swimmers who swim really fast, and like to help others learn how to reach their competitive potential in the area of professional swimming.
