What is the LZR doing in this list?! And what is Flying Fish?!

Responded May 20, 2009 02:37PM

I'm confused about that too sprinter, but Cesar may have hit the nail on the head.

Check out what Tony just dug up at SCAQ Blog:

Definitely bias here. Need to get past that bias or make some BETTER REQUIREMENTS if they are going to try things like this.

Last year I went up to the pool with FS Pro (Speedo 2007) and a B70. We put both in the pool. They both lay ON the water. Great! We then pushed a wire basket down one leg, and tied it off. The basket weighed 6 oz. We put that in the pool, and it continued to just lay ON the water. The basket was on it's side. So we added weight to get to a pound in weight. The basket now tilted at 45 degrees. Interesting. We went up to 2lbs. We finally had the basket upright and floating like a cork. Get my rod. It took just under 3lbs to sink the FS Pro, and just over 4lbs to sink the B70. Now this test isn't scientific in the least... it was simply an observation... however I cannot in all seriousness believe that in some way the process didn't show buoyancy. Per FINA rules they should BOTH be illegal.
The problem we're dealing with is the rules for buoyancy and thickness. Change those drastically and you will remove the majority of the technical suits. Remove the zippers, and we go back to pre 2007... more in line with technical advancements that don't impact the sport in an inherently unfair way. Everyone will think that the fix is on, but in truth when they went for the current standards I never believed that most of the technical suits would be thrown out, and the letter with regards to the permeability makes sense.
Remove the zippers, change the standards, make the testing completely open and available to scientists, and I think we'll go forward. Leave it the way it is, and FINA will be fighting for their political lives in the not too distance future. One final note… Both Thompson and Schubert are paid employees of National Governing bodies. If USA Swimming was sponsored by NIKE, then Mark would be required to wear NIKE stuff. Granted he’d probably break out in a rash since he’s more than likely prejudiced by his long term relationship with Speedo, but I don’t believe that he can be paid by an outside company while working for an NGB. That would be a conflict of interest. If he is, then it should require an investigation. Bottom line is that calling for their heads and implicating them as part of the conspiracy is more than likely off base at this point.

Just the fact that a body, which has the final word about the sport, is sponsored by a swimming items manufacturer is ridiculous. And because humans are humans and most of them act "human" a.k.a. everybody covers his own a$$ regardless the consequences, it is not far from the mind that OF COURSE the same swimming item manufacturer will get bonus points. Even a person with the IQ of 50 would know that. They should rather get a sponsorship by something else OR change their contracts, that the above mentions company is not allowed to terminate the contract or sanctify FINA for the above mentions reason. But we all know now that FINA has problems speaking clearly. Yupp, Cesar is completely right. Everything past 2007 should be banned.

I don't know too much about this, but I believe B70 was denied based on it's ability to trap air. There is supposedly a buoyancy limit that even the B70 didn't surpass. Either way just hope they get some solid standards over the next year or it is going to be a continually painful process having them decide which suits are legal and not.... As all as being a pain for all the swimmers who purchase them.

what is wrong with the "birthday suit",we all have one and they are all legal ?

Billy. The problem with FINA at this point, is that their own words tell part of the story about "air trapping". Because they don't have proper protocols for testing in place, they said the Blueseventy "MAY" trap air. Well... does it, or doesn't it. Also, having worn the B70, I can tell you, if it traps air, it also traps water. I swam my races with my lower back filled with water, and with that said, shouldn't that also come into consideration when doing the testing? If trapping air is so bad, wouldn't trapping water balance that out?

In my opinion, FINA still is basing this list on thing other than scientific tests, and I'll leave it at that.

Until they have set and understood testing procedures, I can't help but think there are other influences involved in their decision as to which suit is allowed, and which suits are banned.

They've created this monster and will continue to be distrusted by many.
