We're looking for some beach-reading suggestions this week.  What's your favorite book and/or movie that features swimming?

"Off the Deep End" by W. Hodding Carter, is a very fun and witty book about a former college swimmer making a comeback. A great read for all us older swimmers!.

Movie: I loved Pride. It was a little rough in spots which sometimes happens when making a fact-based movie and the swimming skills were lacking polish, but the story is good. Looking forward to reading other comments, cuz I haven't come across a lot of swimming books or movies, other than instructional or biographies. Beach Road and Lifeguard are James Patterson books I found good, if you're into him, that have beach related themes.

Oh, a book I read a long time ago, Naked Came The Manatee was pretty good. It's about a manatee and each chapter is written by a different Florida author.

Here's mine. Sorry if it's too deep, but it was written at my level:

Actually, a very important book that promotes water safety for youth. You can read more about it here:

Funny, Glenn!

I haven't read it yet, but it's on it's way to me via the library and being of the 'older' generation, I'm really looking forward to reading it: Age Is Just a Number: achieve your dreams at any stage in your life, by Raea Torres.

I just finished a novel called Swim the Fly, by Don Calame, who normally writes screenplays. It's a teen comedy that had me laughing out loud and that will someday I hope be a movie. It would be hilarious. It's about three teenage friends who every year set a summertime goal. This year it's to see a real live naked girl for the first time. But that's easy compared to the hero's other goal, which is to swim the 100 fly at championships in order to impress the hot new girl on his summer swim team. There's not much actual swimming, but the cast of characters (including two swim coaches from hell) and their misadventures makes for great reading. I'd rate this one PG-13 or 14, and five stars.

If you're looking for something that the family can watch, try "On a Clear Day". It's a Brit film about a guy who gets downsized out of his job at a steel mill and decides to swim the English Channel, and ends up reconnecting with his family. PG-13
