Which makes a more successful swimmer:  the will to win or the will to prepare to win?

Shouldn't be a choise to make....But the common factor is key her.....THE WILL!!!!.....(Juliette's dad)

regarding how hard the preparation is, you must want to do that. otherwise you have no chance no matter how hard you wish to win.

You can have the will to prepare but at the end of the day the race is about 90% in the mind given the same preparation by 2 swimmers. So without the former the latter cannot happen but without the latter the former is a waste of effort. At least, I think that's what I mean.
Anyhow, both elements are important.

There are a number of coined catch phrases that seemingly describe the elements needed to be successful. The will to win being one of them... However, in all my travels and interactions with elite level athletes, the ones that seem to WIN the most, are the athletes that HATE TO LOSE (said through gritted teeth) and have no problem throwing a fit if they lose a game of tiddlywinks. Which I might is actually a game.

Now, I'm more interested in the journey, but what's that other saying? Youth is wasted on the young, because it really was all about the winning. And that desire most definitely made me a better swimmer.

The will to prepare to win. What you do in practice determines how you do in meets.

I hate losing so much its made me angry mmm

both of course

Responded Jun 23, 2009 02:44PM

The will to hardwork

Responded Jun 23, 2009 03:49PM

I agree with Juliette's dad: will is the key word here, and as GW writes, being physical preparation equal, the one with better mental preparation has a better chance at winning. Its all in what one BELIEVES. If you believe that the only road to success is hard work, then that is the way it is going to be.
