Swimming Set of the Week - October 9, 2009

Posted by Barbara Hummel on Oct 09, 2009 05:39AM (3,587 views)

Three short sets with the Tempo Trainer this week.

SET #1:  300
12 X 25 with Tempo Trainer
Goal:  FInd one setting on the TT that works for hearing the BEEP on every hand entry (odd 25s) AND on every other hand entry (even 25s).  Adjust the TT as necessary until you find the right setting.  Hint:  You'll be swimming nice and long on the odd lengths; maybe a little choppy and light on the even lengths.

SET #2: 700
On all swims, alternate 25 back/25 free.

4 X 100 with TT set at one setting that works for back AND free.

4 X 50; choose another TT setting (either faster or slower) that works for back AND free.

4 X 25 back or free; choose another TT setting (faster or slower)

SET #3:  550
5 X 50 with fins and with TT set at one setting (probably in the range of 1:60 to 1:80).
Each 50 is 25 Pulse Breaststroke + 25 of any butterfly drill

6 X 50 without fins and with TT at same setting as before.
Odd 50s:  25 Pulse Breast + 25 Breaststroke
Even 50s:  25 Breast with an Extra Kick + 25 Breaststroke

Pulse Breaststroke, Barbara? What might I also know it as?

Responded Oct 09, 2009 04:28PM

With fins on, pulse breast is dolphins right on the surface with arms extended. Work the hips. Do two or three dolphins then take a breaststroke pull and breath.

With fins off, pulse breast is a stroke of normal breaststroke followed by a dolphin with arms extended. Lots of hips.

do you have any idea how much a TEMPO TRAINER cost?

Responded Oct 12, 2009 02:28AM

They cost approximately $30 US.

thanks, barbara. by the way, the one in the picture is my daughter, ingrid, 14 yrs old. she's a butterflyer, 2;28 on 200m. also IM's are her fave events. but recently at the last competition that she participated in, she was not able to break a single personal best of her in 7 events. i think she is overweight, that's why. can you give me some tips(i am also her coach) on how to get rid of the excess weight but not comprimising the speed. i would appreciate any suggestions from you, miss barbara.

Arms extended... in front, correct? So how is the pulse breast stroke different than body dolphin breast stroke?

Responded Oct 13, 2009 07:26PM

It's the same thing. Arms are extended in front.

guys the tempo trainner is a good device ,my team is improving with this device a lot ....and one of my kids cheated on the 400 meters freestyle when he was hidding the device under his cup but he won the gold medal and beat his older sister who was beating him in trainning ....

James, instead of the TT, you'd probably be better off using stroke count and time. Determine how fast you go using a certain number of strokes, and if you can vary that. More strokes... same time... less strokes... same time. Kinda like your own internal TT.

Responded Oct 14, 2009 02:27PM

Noel, don't worry about the one meet with no pbs. At 14 lots will be going on in her body. Balanced diet and just keep an eye on things. If she's enjoying it, try doing some different events to get the feel of improving again if it's that important.

Responded Oct 14, 2009 03:34PM

If your kids are familiar with the TT, you could probably do all of these sets in one practice, but since there's a bit of explaining that you'll need to do as the coach, you might want to divide them up and use just one per practice.

thanks for the response, GW. yeah, that's what i also thought. i am happy that i found out this goswim site. i can learn many things from other coaches from other countries, like you, GW, and apply it to my own team. btw, GW, what's the ages of your swimmers?

Responded Oct 16, 2009 02:56PM

7 years to 46 years! Usually all in the water at the same time. Nightmare to manage but that's what makes the job fun
