Swim Question of the Week - October 14, 2009

Posted by Glenn Mills on Oct 14, 2009 06:37AM (2,724 views)

With the last few weeks of freestyle technique variation, tell us how open you are to trying new techniques, no matter how "wrong" or "silly" they seem when you first see them.

Case in point:  Would you ever consider swimming backstroke with a bent-arm recovery?

I would. If it is the same drill that I am thinking about, we call it "Hitler drill" :D (backstroke with bent arm recovery).
All kind of coordination and efficiency exercises are good. There is nothing sillier than "chicken wing" freestyle in my repertoire of drills. Show me a sillier one and roof me wrong! :)

I tend to try most drills with an open mind, though I can be somewhat prejudiced sometimes. The problem I have is whether I have (or give myself) enough time for the technique to work, but I do try to read/watch/understand what the drill/technique could do for me and so "evaluate" whether or not it is worth persuing.

He sprinter...can you explain those drills or do you have a visual so I can check tme out???...sound like fun!!!!!!!.Juliette's dad...

I'm always open to trying a new technique. It's making it a part of my actual stroke that's the hard part. I have too many bad habits!

Responded Oct 16, 2009 05:37AM

chicken freestyle is when you swim freestyle with thumbs on you pits all the time. Which means that your elbow is leading your "pull". The drill looks, funny, feel s funny and it is funny :D

My case in point is this...if one continuosly changes the swimming technique...how can one know if it works? After all you need time to see results from a new technique.

Responded Oct 16, 2009 05:00PM

You're not a new swimmer Tomás... :) And don't forget, the longer you've been doing this, you can get a pretty good idea whether something new has potential after a couple days. The more we swim, the more knowledge we have about HOW we swim. Heck, after 40 years... I'm 6-beat kicking it for the first time ever... all the time. It was a great discovery... and that's the STANDARD stuff.

Well, I am open to trying anything so long as it is beneficial.

If bent-arm back is the theme - I am game. I will have to learn the backstroke first since I never tried it before, lol. Nevertheless, next time in the water I will be using bent-arm recovery as I learn the backstroke. Unfortunately it won't be soon since I have a 20 hour flight to Guam 10 hours from now for work. Then I have to find a pool or a good OW swimming area.

Swimming is one of those sports that becomes you, I think... and that's both a good and bad thing. Any drill that can break you out of muscle memory and get you to feel your body moving through the water in a different way is a must-do, for me. If anything, you'll learn what DOESN'T work... which is just as beneficial as learning what does.

Wearing anything hot pink and/or with floral prints, though, is where I draw the line. NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT... :-P

Responded Oct 18, 2009 11:00PM

Really hope that nobody takes that comment the wrong way... :-/

Responded Oct 20, 2009 05:52AM

Tomas, my only thought to your comment is "same is the same" (meaning that if you do the same you will get the same)

Responded Oct 20, 2009 05:57AM

Haha Trev, now we know how to put you under pressure. For every badly done session (which means that you are lazy and bullshitting) you will be forced to swim with a pink speedo and a swimming cap with flowers saying "girl's power" for 30min of your next swim session :D :D :D ;) (where is my video camera, I can win the funniest video on YouTUBE haha)

Responded Oct 21, 2009 04:03PM

Geeeeeeeeeee!!!! Glenn....so I have been swimming for less than 15% of the time you have had. Now...that is an advantage...but even so if you want to beat me in a 100 meter freestyle race...better be prepared to make your nails sweat!!!

Sprinter...well yes "same is the same", but the issue here is how long do you need to be constantly trying new things...hoping that they will work???

Responded Oct 21, 2009 04:22PM

What stroke do you want me to do Tomas?

Responded Oct 21, 2009 05:31PM

Freestyle of course!!! On second thought the one you would not choke up trying to chase me!! Hey Glenn, have you seen the movie "The Peaceful Warrior"...if not I highly recommend it. Interesting stuff!!!

Responded Oct 21, 2009 06:36PM

Tomas, drills do not "work". Drills make your technique and feel for the water work. Even if drill are partly "broken down" technique, at the end the overall picture matters. And since there is always a way to make a technique better, you better never stop trying to improve. Once you've stopped trying, you will stop improving. See it as an never ending alphabet. If you miss a letter to learn and you might never learn read properly.

Responded Oct 21, 2009 06:45PM

Well Sprinter I never stop trying to improve...kaizen swimming is what I practice!!!...but thanks a lot for your answer it makes a lot of sense.

Just do me a favor...change your picture!!! Why would a beautiful young lady like you want that picture????

Responded Oct 21, 2009 07:06PM

No :)

Responded Oct 21, 2009 08:25PM
