Swimming Question of the Week - May 19, 2009

Posted by Glenn Mills on May 19, 2010 11:13AM (4,082 views)

It's been a while since we've done a Question of the Week... but this week does have an interesting opportunity.

If you had ONE shot to use something that you know would make you faster (the suits), LEGALLY... would you take advantage of it, or would you go by the rules you know will be set in less than 2 weeks?

Also take into consideration, this isn't for the Olympics, NCAA, High School, or ANY athletic event that carries with it anything more than self-accomplishment... Masters.

Please keep the answers based SOLELY to masters swimming.

I'd have to say yes Having been away from swimming for over 30 years, and longing to be back "in the middle lanes" again, I would take advantage of LEGAL technology.

I wouldn't only because I don't want to take the risk establishing a personal best that I may never be able to beat once I loose that advantage.

I totaly agree with Oliver. I also would not like this fact.

Ok... while no opinion is wrong, since it's how you feel. However, with those arguments, why would I ever swim again? Because of the advantage of age, training, and desire, I can NEVER hope to achieve the times I did when I was a younger competitive athlete... so I have NEW best times... with descriptions. 100 breast all times best time is X. 100 breast after 40 best time is Y. No reason to compare the two, but they both exist.

So I guess my question is, what's it hurt to add another category just for fun. 100 breast after 40 best time with a tech suit is Z.

Just my opinion. :)

I will. Best time is a best time.

Even though we may not swim our "young" times again, I still love to compete against the best at the highest level "our age" offers. If my competitors are wearing the tech suit, then I want to level the playing field and wear one too. I swim against myself mostly, but still like to win. I did wear a tech suit in four out of my five races at Masters Nationals this weekend. The one race I did NOT wear a tech suit (but a future legal one), I placed the highest and swam closest to my "old best" times. Go figure! I think a big factor in the tech suits is mental. Isn't swimming fast largely mind set anyway?

Glenn ... Fins are not legal but I track my practice times using fins. Fins help my free and fly stroke and cardio development immensely. After an all out timed race against myself using fins, I am totally whipped, and more so than without fins. Swim personal records are personal. Use what you like and what helps you.

Nice Al, and absolutely... all of this if for the individuals... so nobody's answer to this is incorrect.

Give me a suit! Anytime! Why don't we start swimming without goggles again? That is the ONE TIME all records made the biggest advantage ever in the history of swimming. Bigger than the tech suits. And we killed both innovation and a flourishing industry in one sweep...

Responded May 26, 2010 06:44AM

Oh yeah, let's get rid of googles, swimming caps (so everyone will be forced to shave their head) and the tight swim suits and swim in 1920 swim wear again; let's rebuild the pools back to the worse and yeah don't forget to go back to the caves and hunt mammoths for dinner. PJ, what are you 100? Goggles are meant to protect your eyes. And believe me with all that dirt in the water (incl the chemicals) you don't want your eyes to be exposed to that. Let your eyes burn if you want to, I keep my goggles.

I can see where a lot of Masters swimmers where less concerned about the impact of the suits. Also I wouldn't mind if they were still able to use them in Masters competition.

But I also don't see a real difference for Masters swimmer as most of them claim to go to meets to have a good time with friends (not saying they're not competitive, they are!). So I guess if I were in this situation I wouldn't use the suits.
