very tight turn (knees close to head) and awesome belly button ;)

Is it just me or did he push off a little low?

Responded Jun 01, 2010 10:38PM

Not only close to head, but those knees were < 1mm from the bottom. He also has a cool sprint stroke

I don't think he pushes off too low. If he pushes off higher he would pop out on the surface too early.

Hey Trev. I also think that the angle you push off will be dependent upon your ability to dolphin out of the turn. At the very end of this, you'll see Roland just begin to initiate his dolphin kick. We also have to take into account "who" we're watching. Roland is not only one of the fastest 50 freestyle swimmers in the world, but also either currently, or formerly, holds the 50 butterfly world record. Because of that, I'm imagining his dolphin kick is pretty darn good.

Always take into consideration your own personal strengths and weaknesses when determining the depth at which you'll push off. If you're a triathlete who spends hours crunched over the handlebars of your bike, maybe streamlining isn't your thing... so staying under too long would be a negative... get up and swim. On the other hand, when you push off the wall in a great streamline position, you can go farther with no work, and generally faster than breaking out too early.

Hope that helps.
