Swimming Question of the Week - October 6, 2010

I know I've asked this question before... not sure when, but I feel like I have.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend today about this, and wanted to see what others thought.

We all know that water is a liquid, but when you swim, do you imagine water as a liquid, a solid, or something else?

I'm a pretty new swimmer, but I had a "breakthrough" moment last Thursday, where I swam a 100 hard and fast and somehow the water did feel like a solid to me and like I was just grabbing on to it and pushing myself through (my fastest 100 by far ever). I've had something close to that a few times, but this time it was very vivid. I want to have that feeling again and think of the water as solid. It's kind of eluding me at the moment, though.

Sometimes it feels like I'm swimming in pudding but the harder I train the thinner the pudding.

I have heard the analogy of imagining it is Jell-O - viscous, but closer to solid where there is more grip and more sensation of moving "past" it. I have found that when I consciously take this viewpoint, I am much more in tune with my catch and feel a greater amount of propulsion from each stroke. Oddly enough, I have also found myself far less likely to drop my elbow with this mindset.

Always feels like a pure liquid to me - it will work against me as much as I work against it, and with me as much as I work with it. It's very neutral for me.
