Breaststroke - High Heels Progression 2

Here's a remake of a drill we shot back in 2005.  Even with many swimmers trying to get a shallower kick, for some, they've gone a bit too far in trying to reduce the resistance of the recovery, and now get nothing out of the kick at all... time to revisit.

Why Do It:
While hiding the recovery is important, it's also important to get some payback from the kick.  If the feet don't come up high enough, many swimmers don't recieve that payback.

How to Do It:
1. 
 Start with a normal pushoff, into a breaststroke underwater pull.  Once the hands pull down, leave them there, and initiate a series of kicks with the hands held back.
2.  On each recovery, touch the heel with your fingertips.
3.  Next, start with a few kicks with the hands back, then recover the hands as in the underwater pull, and initate a few kicks with the hands in streamline.  This also has a second purpose of working the recovery.
4.  Finally, take this progression to swimming.

How to Do It Really Well (the Fine Points):
The trick is recovering your feet to the same position when the hands are back, and when they're not.  Continue to hide the recovery, but focus on where your feet catch the water and drive you forward.

Experiment on the proper height of the recovery with your coach, and figure out just how much you need to recover.

Nope... I'd say :40 is close, but obviously WAY too close to call from the surface, and 1:06, not close at all. Hands separate prior to the down kick. I love the scrutiny though... if it's not close, you're probably not doing it right. Let me know if I need to pull up the original files and do frame grabs... could be like a where's Waldo contest... did she, or didn't she cheat? :)

Anyways, thank you very much for posting this drill Glenn. I'm new at breaststroke, have kick issues, and the timing is perfect! Will try tomorrow.

Steve. That's the stuff that really gets me angry. I think with today's technology, we should be using underwater cams to catch where people are absolutely cheating for the sake of gaining an advantage. Who swam legally that was knocked out of that final race because many of these guys cheated to beat them. Trying to think of other sports where the athletes can hide from the officials as much as swimmers can. There is no honor in what these guys are doing, and the only lesson they're learning from athletics to serve them the rest of their lives is to cheat to get ahead. I have a bad feeling we'll be seeing much more of this in London. I hope not... but the way the rules are set up, it's inevitable.

The drill was absolutely spot-on for my kick!

Breast was the last stroke for me to pick up. Wasn't tought swimming as a youngster and didn't start until my early 40's. Since I learned breast last, the simplest of basic kick mechanics was difficult for me to engage. My feet wanted to do all they knew how to do - propulsion from the top surface of foot.

The drill let me feel what a br kick is supposed to feel like - pressure on the bottom of feet and inner legs, with productive speed to top it off.
