Pic of the Week - Backstroke Starts

Posted by Glenn Mills on Aug 31, 2012 12:00PM (2,735 views)

A great snap of a young swimmer learning a backstroke start.

This chapter is coming soon, but on the road... so you'll need to imagine the steps she took to get to this point.

You can watch the current chapters of our Backstroke Basics with Steve Haufler video here.

She looks sweet in this shot. She has a nice arch and long arm reach with her hands coming into streamline. I think getting young kids to throw their heads back is key to the entire movement. She really has exceptional position here.

Like almost anything in backstroke it requires some "backwards", or in this case upside-down behavior. This goes against that pesky instinct for self preservation. But, even with this great body position for a young swimmer, does she have the strength and momentum to drive her hips up and get her legs into position for a tight streamline entry into the water?

Once getting kids to master the arch and streamlined hand/head/torso entry, what are the best ways to train for and execute the lower body position and actions? How much is based on strength and size, body proportions for age-group swimmers? How much is about finding the best starting position from the wall? What proportion of AA or better young age group swimmers can master this before the growth and muscular development of puberty?
