Hello all. Just a quick question, I'm planning to join a 1Km open water race on October, which is a couple months from now. Do I actually have to be able to swim a full 1Km continuous or it's not required. I practice in pool and can do 200yards at a time(continuous) up to 2000yards total.

Depends what you mean. If you mean do you have to be able to do it in training, well, not necesarily but if you do it, you know you will be ok in terms of distance on the day. You probably need to do it without touching the walls in the pool because, obviously, on the day you will have no walls to turn on. Do you have to swim 1k in the race, wll, it's a 1k race so yes you do but you can tread water, I guess if you get tired. You can change stropkes as well but, at least in the UK you can't swim on your back. Hope that makes sense |

Yes, I meant 1km continuously on training. That's interesting that you guys are not allowed to swim on your back, I'll have to find that out if we have the same rules here in Arizona. Thank you for the response, it does make sense to actually do the whole 1km in the pool to be more comfortable on race day. |

I would highly recommend doing some practice open water swims as part of your training. The approach I took with the young first-time triathlete I was training this summer was to have him swim longer than the race distance in the pool, continuous, at least a couple of times before race day. And in the few weeks leading up to his triathlon, he had many pool sessions where his total swim distance was 3 times as far (or even more) than he would swim on race day, but it was not continuous. Rather, broken up into sets that were 1/5 to 1/2 of his total swim distance in the race. He did 3 open water swim practices and none of them had a continous swim that was as long as he had to do on race day. The open water swim practices were much shorter than his yardage for pool practices. But with these things together, he was quite confident and did well on race day. |

sounds like a very effective way to approach race day Sheila. |

I started my triathlete training last year and will be going for my first effort coming season.

Have you got access to a resistance pool/swim spa? This kind of thing? http://www.endlesspools.com/inground-pools... They're pretty useful for training if you can't swim in open water, you can swim continuously without breaking it up. Some gyms have them. It helped me psychologically as I knew I could do it. |
