Navy Seal swim test

Ok, Im all excited what the US Navy seals did this past week. I am going to try and swim the 500yrds on a side stroke like a navy seal. They say 8to9 min but that does not put you in front of the class. It must be done in 6:30. Only one ear travels in water. What do you think? Can you pass the test? Post your time! And we only wear a bathing suit, I believe the seals travel with just a little more weight. I'll report back with my time on Wed night.

No way I could do that. 500 yd freestyle takes me about 9 min when I'm busting my butt. I have no idea what I'd do sidestroke, but I'm sure it would be much slower.

Eager to hear about your results, though.

We did the test with our Masters team a year ago. We have some definite SEAL potential on our team, especially with the women! Before we did the test, we all watched the Go Swim DVD: Go Swim Combat Sidestroke with Don Walsh. Don teaches the SEAL recruits and I believe he's got a 100% success rate for getting them to pass the physical test to get into the program.

Good luck!

Well I did not come close to the 6:30 500 yd side stroke. More like 11:15. Heck, It is a stroke that must take months to get precise. Well Those navy seals in my eyes are superman in our world.

Barbara just curious on the time you did the 500 in? Do you recall? And what were the avg. times for the side stroke. Its just hard to do.

Good job on testing out your sidestroke for 500 yards. I'd expect it's like any stroke...the more you practice it specifically the better/faster you'll get.

I believe the Physical Screening Test (must be passed in order to become a candidate for SEAL training program) is 500 yards sidestroke in less than 12.5 minutes. That's what we used as our test with the Masters swimmers. We didn't keep records, but I recall that many of our intermediate and advanced swimmers met the challenge. We watched Go Swim Combat Side Stroke with Don Walsh and practiced the special technique for a few days before doing the test. It was a fun break from regular training.

So true on a fun break. That was my week. 4 days of NYC news footage and off to the pool to pull off a navy seal test week. It takes months of training to perfect the sidestroke. Thanks for the info. I'm back to my 200 IM's and all the rest. I have left the sidestroke behind me.
Keep on kicking!
