I am changing up my sons eating pattern as his practices are later at night. I had been rushing him to eat dinner right after practice and then right to bed. Ideally I could change practice times, but he trains with 40 other kids so no dice there. So after posting here, I decided to feed him a larger meal after school and then do recovery drink/snack after practice. Have heard that chocolate milk has good ratio of carb to protein. What might you recommend? Also does one continue this during taper. I expect he'll be in for some long yardage the next 3 weeks and then switch over to speed training heading into his championship meets. Do you still use the idea of recovery heading into the focus meet? |

One of the moms of a swimmer on my summer novice swim team showed me an article on chocolate milk. We tried it and it seems like the kids like it and it helped as far as I could tell. As far as during hard practices to be honest you probably can just stick to lots of Gatorade during and after &/or powerbars with carbs before practice. During taper you can probably continue Gatorade but obviously he wont be near as thirsty just keep a good balanced carb diet. Such as pastas. Just additional I'm sure you have heard of the 1,2,3 step Gatorade system. I really like it personally so you could consider stocking up on those. |
