When we try to get our young swimmers started at the beginning of a season, we have to remember what habits they've brought in, and which ones we'll reinforce by our daily training.

The way we circle in crowded lanes helps to reinforce the constant circling of the swimmers. This can creep in to competitions and end up having the swimmer go further than they needed to to complete the race.

To break the habit, have a couple lanes swim in the opposite direction. Instead of staying on the RIGHT side of the lane, they have to stay on the LEFT.

As you can see, this becomes an exercise of mental focus as much as it's an exercise in body control.
