Increasing body awareness when there is asymmetry_….This young girl has Autism. She loves the water and craves the sensory input it provides for her body. When she swims she lacks symmetrical rotation of her trunk. She is right-handed and has some decreased awareness of the left side of her body, which is especially evident when she swims. By using a dumbbell in her left hand she is forced to rotate her trunk and exert more effort to use that arm for front crawl. This extra effort gives her the awareness she needs to stimulate a greater range of motion in that arm as she swims and she has better symmetry during the stroke. Adding the dumbbell between her legs helps with her core stability, sense of midline and rotation with front crawl.
