When setting up the backstroke, it's important to understand that it's not just the arms but the arms in combination with the body that makes you go forward.

Since the beginning of these videos, we've stressed core stability. Here is a great place to see where it all comes together.

 Watch the rotation of the hips as the hand enters the water. you'll see that when the lead hand enters the water, the hips and hand rotate down at the same rate, I'm at the hip stay down for as long as possible until the other hand enters the water and the hips go down again 

With the lead hand in the hips connected, you'll be more on your side when it's time for you to initiate the pull. 

Has the lead hand enters the water, try to snap the hips into the position where they are the most rotated. The most important aspect of this skill is to make sure that the hand and the hips rotate down in unison. Again this puts your body in the best position to initiate a powerful pull.
