**The Problem:  Extra or Misplaced Body Dolphin** 
When a swimmer throws in an extra body dolphin -- causing the dreaded double bump -- it can absolutely ruin their butterfly.
 
The problem is caused when the swimmer presses down with the chest on the second kick instead of snapping the body into a line.
 
**The Fix**
One fix for the “double bump” is something called “Fly Bobs.”

Find some deep water and get into a vertical position with your hands just under the surface.  If you’re real buoyant, you my need to scull yourself down like this.

Stay vertical…that’s important.

Establish your initial position with arms straight up at shoulder width or a little wider.   

Press out a little and turn your palms so they’re facing the bottom.

Keep looking straight ahead, and then execute your butterfly pull.  

There’s no kicking in this drill.  Keep the body straight and you’ll rise vertically.

Keep the elbows up and you’ll see your hands come to a diamond position, like this.

Press down a little more and then round out the exit.

As you finish the pull, your face should be breaking the surface.  Keep your arms relaxed and swing them straight around and in line with the sides of the body.

The arms appear above the water…keep them apart, like this, at shoulder width.

Drop down vertically until your hands are under water and ready to start another Fly Bob!

Another fun way to help swimmers fix the “double bump” and learn to stabilize the body with the second kick is a drill called Vertical Butterfly, and it starts with the swimmer jumping off the bottom into a straight vertical line.

The swimmer then sets up for the pull by pressing the chest forward and stretching up with the hands. The hips will press out. Like this.

The swimmer pulls and snaps the body into a straight line.

Then just sink back down and jump again.

The swimmer can also try vertical butterfly without jumping off the bottom. 

Wait until the hands slide under water, set up your hips, and then pull and snap into a vertical line.

Repeat, and remember to get some air when you break the surface.
