Glide Kick is a great drill for teaching you to finish each kick and for teaching you how long to hold the glide between kicks.

Keep your hands and arms in streamline and simply kick breaststroke, making sure to finish each kick.   Stay right at the surface, and allow your body to glide in streamline at the end of each kick. 

Your goal on this drill is to keep moving forward at all times.  Watch your shadow or the tiles on the bottom of the pool to see how you’re doing.   If the tiles stop and become crystal clear, you’re not moving forward.  If this happens, you’re gliding a bit too long.

Adjust your rhythm until you can keep moving at all times.

You can also practice Glide Kick on your back.   Finish each kick with authority and then glide for a few counts…but don’t come to a complete stop.  Keep moving forward.

To really challenge yourself, try Glide Kick on your back with your arms held straight out of the water.   

You’ll discover right away that this teaches you balance, timing, and the importance of not coming to a complete stop.   You have to finish each kick, but if you hold the glide too long, you’ll start to sink.
