*Wrist Weights*

Motor planning back stroke using multi-sensory cues to increase body awareness.…This young boy is diagnosed with Down Syndrome. He is having difficulty learning back stroke and usually just kicks on his back without using his arms. This is because on his back he cannot use vision to sense where his arms are in space. We use small 1/2 pound wrist weights to increase awareness in his arms. We then use the resistance of our hands to guide the arm motion for the proper stroke. Once he responds to this cueing we fade it away, and see if he can be more independent. The visual target of reaching for the noodle helps him have more success.
