While this drill may seem more advanced, it’s building on rhythmic breathing, and introducing the proper pushoff for swimming.

This is best done in water that’s just a bit deeper so you can be completely submerged when you start.  Lower yourself to a squatting position on the bottom with your hands locked over your head.  You should feel very pointed and, streamline.

When you’ve lowered yourself enough, simply JUMP toward the surface.  Keep your arms locked in the streamline position as you break through the surface of the water.

While it’s good to push off and land with the arms in the streamline position, if you feel that you’re going off balance in this exercise, after you’ve pierced the surface, allow your hands to separate and land on the surface.  This can help keep you more stable as you fall back down to the bottom.

As in the previous exercises, remember to say to yourself.  Breathe OUT through the nose under and breathe IN through the mouth above.
