OK, this is about as close as you can get to regular backstroke without having it be regular.

1-Count Backstroke still has a slight pause between the strokes, but mostly that’s to allow you to focus on initiating the recovery before the pull.

Just as in the last drill, making sure you keep the head steady is very important.  When you start to feel like regular backstroke, the head will act as a stabilizer, so don’t allow it to rock from side-to-side.  Keep the eyes looking UP.

Initiating the recovery also will help you continue to focus on rotation.

Through this entire process, with the pauses between the strokes, it’s been necessary to continue the kick.  We’ve not had to mention it because you wouldn’t have been able to get to this point without it.

With that said, as the propulsion now starts to come from the arms, and not just the legs, some people may stop the kick.  To create a stable backstroke, a constant kick is a big help.
