Thinking of the relaxed neck for freestyle, let’s give you a few more ideas about where to look while swimming freestyle.

While the eyes are generally thought of to be down, typically, if the eyes are TOO far down, it’s difficult to get the shoulder rotated properly to get into the best position to be sleek in the water.

The eyes should be right next to the shoulder during extension, not under it.  Looking slightly forward will give you this position.

Even as this swimmer increases the speed a bit, the eyes are just above the shoulder of the rotated and extended body.  Looking slightly forward allows this to happen.

Make sure you play with varying degrees of where you look, as no two people are exactly the same.  Different body types, different degrees of flexibility, your swimming knowledge… we each have to experiment with slightly different places to look to find the right position that allows us to reach full rotation, full-extension, and avoid having the hips sink because the eyes are looking too far forward.
