Bilateral breathing, or breathing to both sides, is a great way to learn equal rotation to both sides.  It also allows you the opportunity to spend a little time between breaths to recheck your head position, rotation and extension.

In breathing every 3rd stroke, start off swimming freestyle, and you’re simply going to count to three.  Breathe, stroke, stroke, Breathe, stroke, stroke, Breathe.

Between your breaths, think about your stroke timing, where your eyes are looking, if you’re rolling enough and reaching full extension.  Also, are you exhaling between the breaths, or are you holding your breath until the last second.
