Balance balance balance. Good body line in backstroke will make everything you do easier and more productive. By keeping your head torso hips thighs feet as close to the surface as possible you'll create less resistance and any movement for propulsion will be more productive.

When swimming backstroke you want to feel as much of your torso engaging with the surface of the water as possible. You'll notice that this swimmer has her entire blue suit touching the surface of the water during rotation. When she gets to her side you'll also notice that her thigh is touching the surface of the water. She's not doing this by bending her leg up, but this is a byproduct of good body balance.

By keeping the entire body as close to the surface as possible, you'll create less resistance which will allow for easier rotation.
