When thinking of incorporating breathing into butterfly, we have to make sure that the head follows the flow of the body. So this particular exercise starts with three body dolphins or dolphin kicks. And on the third one, the head releases or looks up a bit in order to get the air.

Now, our athletes started initially with no fins on. But one of the ways to really learn this more easily is to incorporate fins. You don't have to kick as hard. It allows the flow to have a little bit more push to it, and it'll allow you to get up to air just a little bit easier.

The exercise is, three body dolphins with then a release to air. You can see that this athlete will start to incorporate that small pull that we used in the last lesson. This is useful in helping you learn the timing and how to initiate the arms in your pull for butterfly, but also allows you to get up to air very easily when you're learning this drill for the first time.
