Progressions build swimming skill through deliberate, repeatable stages, from foundational balance and body position to advanced stroke mechanics and race performance.

Core Philosophy

* **Glenn** connected swimming progressions to music, football, martial arts, and other disciplines: mastery comes from building basic skills before performing at full speed.
* The discussion emphasized focusing on the current drill, play, or stroke rather than the final outcome. Daily preparation and “the mundanity of excellence” matter more than chasing championships.
* Progress should be built from one high-quality repetition to the next; poor fundamentals compound, while strong fundamentals support later performance.

Teaching Foundations

* For young swimmers, the first priorities are body position, head position, balance, posture, floating, and alignment. Without these, kicking, pulling, and breathing become inefficient.
* Fundamentals must be revisited throughout growth and puberty because changing bodies require continual recalibration.
* **Steve** described teaching as starting with the most basic skill, then adding complexity until the swimmer reaches the full stroke. Coaches should know the intended end result and the next step in the progression.

Drill Applications

* Demonstrated freestyle progressions included early vertical forearm, position 11, high-elbow catch, scooter drill, touch-and-pull, magnets, catch-up variations, and single-arm work.
* Mirrors, filming, physical guidance, dry-land demonstrations, and other forms of immediate feedback help swimmers connect what they see with what they feel.
* The group discussed adapting progressions for different ages and abilities, including floating aids for beginners and cautious use of snorkels, sticks, balls, or light weights.

Open Topics

* The group considered future progression sessions on breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, turns, adult instruction, and unusual Masters swimming techniques.
* **Steve’s** beginner Masters 1A program was described as an eight-week course with 24 classes, three sessions per week, focused on floating, body position, water feel, breathing, and gradual stroke development.
