The first step in teaching freestyle is to teach the correct body position.
We call it “Position 11” because we start with the arms extended and parallel.
I am a big believer in streamline, but when I teach freestyle we start with the arms exactly parallel and the hands flat.
The swimmer should look straight down at the bottom of the pool, with the head in a neutral position, and with the arms higher than the ears.
The lower back should be flat, and we push the belly button in a little to get them into this position.
The body should be relaxed, but not loose.
