From Position 11 Breathing, it’s just a short step to almost Position 11 – which is where you want to be for an effective stroke.  

Most swimmers will want to go to Almost Position 11, and you can let this happen naturally.  

If they start windmilling, you may have to go back a step to Position-11 Arms and reinforce that with more verbal cues and more repetition until it becomes second nature.  

Then try again with almost Position 11.

Freestyle is the key training stroke for every swimmer, so it’s important not to rush the steps and to make sure they have all the elements:

…a horizontal body position and good Position 11, with arms fully extended…

…a kick that starts from the hips, preferably steady and with pointed toes…

…big arms and a stroke that takes them almost to Position 11 every time…

…relaxed, rhythmic breathing without lifting the head.
